What Does a Content Marketer Do?
Content marketers are responsible for creating and distributing content.
In it’s simplest form, content marketers plan, create, and distribute content marketing assets including:
Social media content
One-pagers
Blogs and articles
Case studies
Videos
Digital reports
Slides and pitch decks
As a content marketer, your job is to create all the go-to-market (GTM) content your organization needs to sell your product.
But it’s not enough for you to just create content in a silo and call it a day.
You must also connect the dots.
Understanding your B2B tech startup’s business, the product you sell, and how content is used by cross-functional teams across the marketing and GTM spectrum is what will take you from a good content marketer to a great full-stack content marketer.
Because you’ll go from an average content marketer barely keeping their head above water to a content marketing leader capable of generating traction and sparking long-term growth.
As such, a career in content marketing isn't for the feint of heart. And if you're still undecided about starting a career in content marketing, you might have questions like:
What is content marketing?
What does a content marketer do?
How much money can you make from a career in content marketing?
In this post, I’ll answer these questions so you can understand what content marketers do everyday—specifically in the B2B tech startup space.
What is content marketing?
Content marketing involves the creation and distribution of digital assets that engage, educate, and persuade a specific target audience within a given category.
Let me break this down:
“Content marketing involves the creation and distribution of digital assets”
This is the most obvious part about content marketing. You create content and you share content. Pretty straight forward.
“That engage, educate, and persuade”
You aren’t creating content for the sake of it. You’re creating to engage (drive traffic), educate (provide value), and persuade (offer solutions).
“A specific target audience within a given category”
This is the most important part most content marketers miss. You must create content for one audience type while simultaneously promoting your category.
A decade ago, content marketing was still an emerging field, most notably known for producing blog and social media content. But today, content marketing is the epicenter of marketing teams, because without content, there is no marketing.
The content marketer’s role has expanded ten fold, and the reliance on content continues to grow.
What does a content marketer do?
A content marketer's main responsibility is to create compelling content specific to their target audience to achieve business goals.
Content marketers oversee the production of marketing content that supports their content marketing strategy.
They also plan, create, and distribute content, manage editorial calendars, and lead content marketing teams. These teams range from solo marketers to entire teams sporting content strategists, content writers, designers, web developers, and more.
In addition, content marketers are responsible for creating content management plans that ensure a steady output of high quality content.
How much money can you make from a career in content marketing?
Content marketing roles pay anywhere from $60,000 a year to over $180,000 a year.
That means that under the right circumstances, you can enjoy a high paying content marketing career.
Your salary and benefits package will differ due to a wide variety of factors including years of experience, company, and job title.
But the most important factor that you can control in your earning potential is whether or not you're a full-stack content marketer.
If you’re ready to 3x your content marketing salary as a full-stack content marketer, start here:
What is full-stack content marketing?
Full-stack content marketing is a term reserved for content marketers who can create multimedia content that effectively positions tech products.
Unlike average content marketers, full-stack content marketers not only know how to make multimedia content, but they also possess marketing and business acumen like:
Content strategy
Content distribution and repurposing
Copywriting
Video production
Graphic design
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Category design, positioning, & messaging
Storytelling
Collaboration and project management
Performance measurement and improvement
Content creators, content marketing specialists, and content marketing managers can all benefit from learning full-stack content marketing skills.
And now that you’ve got a basic understanding of what content marketers do, you can make an informed decision:
Do you want to become a full-stack content marketer who enjoys a legendary career sparking radical growth for B2B tech startups?
The choice is yours.
